OUR CAMBODIA CLIMATE

A- About the climate in Cambodia, is it ok?

B- No problem. Please start your question and I also want to talk about this.

A- What does Cambodia climate look like?

B- Like all countries in the Southeast Asian region, the climate in Cambodia is hit, or at least warm.

Do you know how many seasons Cambodia has?
Cambodia has two seasons, the dry and the rainy. During the dry season, from November to April, the wind blows from northeast and the skies are clear almost every day. During the rainy season, from May to October, the wind blows from the southwest bringing rain almost every day as well.

A- When is the hottest and coldest time of the year?

B- The hottest month is April, when temperatures reach the highest point at midday. The coldest month, on the other hand, are December and January when the temperatures reach the lowest point during midnight.

A- What do you think about the rainy season?

B- In Cambodia, when shopkeepers start selling lots of raincoats to their customers and there is demand for umbrellas too, it is reliable sign and that the rainy season must have started.

A- How often does the rain fall down in rainy season?

B- It rains almost every afternoon and in the evening the rain often turns into a heavy down pour along with thunder and lightning.

A- Could you tell me what are advantages of the rainy season?

B- Actually, the rain season has both advantages and disadvantages. It brings good soil and water which farmers need to cultivate their land. Plants, trees and animals all require rain, while farmers rely on it to provide water for their fields. On the other hand, the rainy season has floods which can badly damage or destroy people’s houses and crops and even kill people and animals.

A- That’s right. But our ancestor’s word stated that without rain there wouldn’t be any lives on earth at all.

SUPERSTITION IN DAILY LIFE

A- I think that everything in the world is getting more and more modern, is it right?

B- The same to you. Because everything is sophisticated and those which have emerged from scientific research. Sometimes, they can be self-operated.

A- How do you think about our country?

B- It seems to walk a bit backward because most of people still have superstition and other belief in Khmer folklore. They always strictly uphold in their daily lives.

A- Do you mean that our people are the conservators?

B- No! I just take notice that Khmer people still have believed in the magic power. They like praying when they wish something. Sometimes, they can get too.

A- Can you give me some examples?

B- When they get sick, they always pray for good luck or make offering. Sometimes, their worship is

as effective as they wished. The superstition got from ancestors.

A- Do you think our custom or tradition is so strict?

B- Sure! As you have known, if you want to go wherever you want, you always ask your parents first.

If they don’t allow, you won’t have rights because we are lady.

A- Do you take notice that most of men always insult Khmer ladies?

B- They always say that Khmer ladies have not enough courage and they are softhearted. Moreover, they are weak either bodily or spiritually.

A- Do you have anything else to tell me?

B- Sometimes, they said that Khmer women will live on their husband after they got married because our women have knowledge a little bit.

VALENTINE’S DAY (1)

B- I’m very well. I hope you too, is it right?

A- Yes. Do you know what day of February 14 is?

B- Yes, I do. It’s a Valentine’s Day celebration. It’s popular for general people especially teenagers in order to give the blessing to their friends and spouses.

A- Can you tell me about history of Valentine’s Day briefly?

B- Actually, there are two visions which express about history of Valentine’s Day. I can tell you one by one. Because the both visions are opposite to each other.

A- What are they? Please tell me now.

B- They always say that Valentine’s Day has been celebrated in the middle of February in order to commemorate Clergy Valentine’s death since A.D.207.

A- What is the other one?

B- It’s very sacred day to be gratitude to two boys, Romulus and Remus, who found Rome city. It’s also a day of endeavor for Christianization.

A- How do you think of it in Cambodia?

B- It’s a good chance for young people to extend their love by purchasing some roses or taking some photographs with their couple of live.

A- Do you mean the proof of love is flower or photos?

B- No. Valentine’s Day is a special day we give something to each other---the rose flowers are representative of clear heart for their first live.

A- If you are giving a secret love to a lady, will it be good for you to confess?

B- Yes. It’s a good opportunity to confess to her related to faithful mind which we hide in our heart for long time.

A- How do you think about the price of rose in Phnom Penh?

B- Generally, a rose is 1000 or 1500 riel but except the Valentine’s Day, the sellers vend $1 or $2 for a rose. It’s a spark time.

A- I also take notice that all teens are still pleased to buy for their sweetheart to express their love and honesty.

TALKING ABOUT UNEMPLOYMENT

A- Hello! I’m nice to see you.

A- Sure! These days, I’m unhappy because I’m a graduate student but I don’t have a job to do! I don’t know what I should do right now?

B- Oh my god! I suppose how big it is. Actually, I’m also an unemployment guy and I graduated two years ago but I still have a hope.

A- Can you tell me what I should do to get a job?

B- It seems beyond my capacity a bit. Cambodia is so rigorous to look for a job. You can try to follow up job announcement on paper’s pages.

A- What kind of job are you seeking?

B- I studied accounting field and then I would like to fulfill this task---accountant is good occupation for me.

A- I think it’s very difficult. How can you get it?

B- As I mentioned above I still have a hope because our proverb said that “You never fail unless you stop”. This always encourages me to try again and again.

A- Besides of your accounting field, can you speaking any foreign languages?

B- Certainly, I can speak two languages, English and Mandarin especially my computer use is available. I used to work for an organization as voluntary staff.

A- Really! Do you have any difficulties when you worked with foreigner?

B- At first, it’s difficult but I always try all my best to succeed my obligation. Sometimes, I wondered a lot but I had partnerships who worked with me to help.

A- Did you have any mistakes in your works?

B- Yes, I did. But I think it’s wrong first, we just find right later. We can say that firstly difficult, just comfortable later. Do you understand?

A- Were you ever assigned to work outside?

B- Not frequently! Especially, when the organization had important thing, they usually dispatched me to do.

A- I’m 60 kilos heavy now; I’ve lost a lot of weight.

B- Have you gotten any exercise?

A- Sure, I got an exercise every day. I enjoy jogging, swimming and playing soccer. Do you intend to lose weight?

B- Definitely. As you can see, I’m gaining weight very fast and I’m also starting a potbelly.

A- Do you ever get any exercise?

B- Not regularly. I’ve always hated running, playing basketball and skiing.

A- Well, why don’t you do anything else?

B- I enjoy biking. In fact, I used to go long trips, but lately I can never seem to find the time to do the exercise. Where do you often exercise?

A- I sometimes exercise at the riverbank in front of the Royal Palace, but sometimes at Olympic Stadium. As you are aware, people are exercising more than ever before. A recent poll shows that more than 70 percent of the adult population exercise every day. Do you know why?

B- Yes, I do. 1). Because when you are in good physical shape, you look and feel better. 2). Because vigorous exercise help to prevent illness and it is important for weight control.

A- Thank you for telling me. Now how much do you weight?

B- Around 65 kilos. I intend to lose weight, but I really don’t know what to do. If you don’t mind, give me some good advice, please.

A- Never mind, first you should get a lot of exercise, and you must never eat meat, fatter food, bread and potatoes at all. Second you should have a lot of fruit as well.

A- You know there are some common ideas about food.

A- Sure. We should keep our body fit. As you know, most people think of having good figures and fitness.

A- Not right. But sometimes I’m disappointed at not winning the prize.

B- Are you popular with your siblings?

A- Sure, I’m not only popular with my sibling, but I’m also popular with my friends.

A- Not very much, because our society is riddled with corruption and offences.

B- Are you disgusted at our teacher’s antics?

A- No, I’m not. Because his antics often amuse me.

B- Is your father’s face different from yours?

A- Because our people still destroy our environment.

A- There are a lot of factors that the environments are destroyed. For social environment:

1- People make a quarrel. Wags war to destroy people’s and animal’s lives.

2- Commit crimes, robberies, theft and illegal trade.

3- Sow corruption and briberies.

4- Create prostitution, gambling, night-club and Karaoke parlors.

B- What about natural environment? By what ways do people destroy the natural environment?

B- For roughly three years. I’m going to take my examination next week.

B- No, never. But I plan to go to Singapore.

B- According to scripture of Christianity, they usually celebrate this auspicious occasion on 14 February every year. Boyfriends or girlfriends and married couples invite each other to go out to have romantic dinner.

A- What’s your point of views on learning English? = why do you study English?

B- I think it’s important to me in the future. And also, if we know English well, it’s easy to find a job in private companies, international organizations or communicate with foreigners. Especially, it’s the international language.

A- Have you ever spoken with foreigners?

B- Yes, but when I’m ready to speak to them I always afraid in my mind because I think that my English knowledge is still poor.

A- Do you have any difficulty in listening to the foreigners’ accent?

B- Yes, I sometimes have difficulty in listening to them.

A- What should we do to listen easily to the foreigners’ accent?

B- We have to try to read or pronoun every word clearly and correctly with the phonetic symbols, stresses, intonation, and voice ranges or try to listen to the tapes or the native speakers every day.

B- If we want to be good at learning English at first we have to know a lot of words, structures and grammar especially practice speaking it every day.

A- Do you know any best ways to learn English effectively?

B- It depends on we learn reading, writing, listening and speaking it every day. Had better, you should take care of the teacher’s explanation.

A- What should we do to avoid speaking Cambodian too much?

B- We should take opportunities to practice English with our friends, classmates, and especially with our English teachers in class.

A- What should we do to pronounce English correctly as foreigners?

B- On behalf of we are Cambodians; we can’t pronounce English the same as foreigners. We actually speak English like Cambodian accent. But, however, we have to try to pronounce English correctly with intonation and void range.

A- What kind of dictionary do we have to choose to use?

B- We should choose the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English because it contains many Words, Structures, Synonyms, Antonyms, Phrasal verbs, Idioms, and Grammar keys.

A- What kind of English do we have to use correctly?

B- I think there are only two kinds that are internationally used all over the world. Mean: the British English and American English.

B- Owing to the theory of western sociologist, the major issues of youth in the world are: 1- opportunity, 2- job title, 3- good position, 4- high salary, 5- prestige, 6- high knowledge, 7- specific skill, 8- and final problem is choosing a wonderful perfect match.

A- Among these points which one is the best issue for your life?

B- I think that finding wonderful bedmate is the best issue for youth’s life.

A- Do you think, choosing a couple for life is an easy thing?

B- No, it isn’t. You know, choosing a person to be a future partner is one of the most essential decisions in a person’s life.

A- Why do you have the best point of view that?

B- As you are aware, a good marriage can bring a happy life in many countries especially European one young men and women choose their own marriage partners.

A- By the way, when you grow up, I mean when you have enough age to get married, do you choose yourself or you dependent on your grateful person?

B- I’m not sure, but to protect and encourage Khmer culture and tradition I have to depend on my break winner.

A- What are the advantages and disadvantages between choosing by yourself and your parents?

B- Parents may make a better choice than their children because they are not only older but also wiser.

A- Why parents know clearly and more experience in these problems?

B- Because parents have been married, therefore they know better what qualities are desirable in a spouse. Furthermore, parents may be better judges of character than young people who often let emotions influence their judgment. To summarize, arranged marriage by parents may bring happiness for new couple because parents choose with their heads not with their hearts.

A- I don’t agree with you. Sometimes parents may make a poor choice which cause young couple may never be happy together, the main disadvantage is that a young man or woman may already have fallen in love with someone else, if the parents force him or her to marry, the result will be unhappy and the new couple will not get on well with each other and will be divorce.

B- Do you think money is very important for new couple?

A- Of course, money doesn’t automatically bring happiness, but a lack of money certainly cause stress in any relationship.

B- Language is the system of communication in speech and writing that is used by people of a particular country.

A- What sort of communicative language do people use in the world?

B- To communicate people use the three main languages in the world: 1- spoken language, 2- written language and 3- movement language.

A- What’s the meaning of movement language?

B- Movement language or body language is the process of communicating what you are feeling or thinking by the way you place and move your body rather than your words.

A- Then, what does spoken language mean?

B- The spoken language is a word that expresses speech rather than being written or sung.

A- Which languages do people often use widely rather than of all?

B- The language valued and used widely in the world are: spoken language and body language.

A- To communicate well with people from different counties in the world, what should people do?

B- To ease to relate or exchange information, news and ideas with people all over the world we should learn foreign languages.

A- What foreign languages should we learn?

Khmer Funeral Ceremony

A- By the way, were you ever haunted by ghost?

B- No. I didn’t. I always attend all funerals in my village because I would like to learn something from Khmer funerals.

A- Really? Can you tell me why?

B- Sure! Khmer funeral is a regular ceremony that we can get lots of experiences and it’s also a part of our ancient culture and tradition. So, we should learn clearly.

A- Do you know why they always hold funeral ceremony?

B- Because funeral ceremony is a duty which corpse’s family must fulfill. If they evade, they will be criticized by society and they will murmur about.

A- Can you explain me more exactly?

B- I mean that if somebody in their family died, they will hold a funeral in order to give a lift the corpse’s spirit according to custom adapting through various areas.

A- How many days does funeral always last for?

B- I’m not sure. According to our custom, it lasts for three days, but sometimes, depends on the ability of corpse’s family to pay. So, it can hold a half--day as well.

A- Why do they always attend a funeral ceremony?

B- Because all friends, villagers and relatives want to show their respect for the dead person. That’s only appropriateness.
